The Department of Gastroenterology "R.Farini" of the General Hospital of Padua (Italy), where the Chair of Gastroenterology of the Department of Surgical and Gastroenterological Sciences of the Medical School of Padua University exerts the patients' care, devotes a large share of its activity to prevention, diagnosis, staging and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors. In this area, a program of early diagnosis, staging and multimodal treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma has been started since the eighties, whose responsible is Dr. Fabio Farinati (C.V.). This program makes available to all patients with primary and secondary liver tumors, through its out-patient clinic, day-hospital and ward activity all the possible diagnostic and therapeutic facilities. This is specifically true for loco-regional treatments, such as percutaneous US-guided ethanol injection, radiofrequency-mediated thermal ablation and arterial, lipiodol-mediated chemoembolization. Future developments include the use of hormonal treatments or of treatments associated with or alternative to chemotherapy and, in an experimental phase at the moment, clinical trials of gene therapy.
